“He is on a different planet” – Paul Merson picks between Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne for Footballer of the Year award

Mohamed Salah of Liverpool and Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City are two of the frontrunners for the Premier League Player of the Year award this season.

Sky Sports analyst Paul Merson has given his opinion on who he believes will win the award between the two.

Salah has been the frontrunner for the Premier League Player of the Year award this season after another productive outing in front of goal for Liverpool.

De Bruyne, on the other hand, has had a fantastic season and has boosted his prospects with amazing displays in recent games.

Merson believes Salah is deserving of the award, but De Bruyne might overtake him with a late flourish. The Englishman writes in his  Daily Star column:

“Kevin De Bruyne is making a late case for footballer of the year. But Mohamed Salah is a worthy winner, in my opinion. Sometimes I think we should wait until the end of the season before voting for these things because it could still be De Bruyne who decides the title. His ankle is better; he’s fit again, and he’s flying.

“And he is on a different planet to everyone else when he is playing like that. When he bursts through, he can still play the absolutely perfect weight of pass. He’s just been outstanding the last few weeks.”

It’s worth mentioning that De Bruyne had a difficult start to the season, with an ankle injury restricting his effectiveness.

The Belgian returned to form shortly before the turn of the year and hasn’t looked back since.

Mohamed Salah, on the other hand, has been a driving force in Liverpool’s assault throughout the season. That is one of the reasons Merson believes the Egyptian has a better chance of winning the award.

“But De Bruyne had a spell earlier this season when he was coming back from injury and wasn’t very good. Salah has been consistently good,” said Merson.

Mohamed Salah is the division’s most prolific finisher at the moment, leading the scoring charts with 22 goals and 12 assists in 34 games. Meanwhile, Kevin De Bruyne has 15 goals and seven assists in 28 games.

It’s worth noting that both players are assisting their respective teams in their quest for the league championship this season.

The Belgian, though, has a greater chance of winning, with Manchester City leading the title race with 89 points, three points ahead of the Reds, with two games remaining.
