Harry Kane has already told Erik ten Hag and Manchester United what they want to hear
As rumors about his future intensify, Harry Kane may be experiencing a sense of familiarity.
It has been two years since Manchester City were unable to secure a transfer for the England captain due to the formidable negotiating skills of Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.
However, the situation has shifted, as Kane’s contract is set to expire in just 15 months and Manchester United has expressed interest in acquiring him.
This could be the first step in a chain reaction of transfers, as Kane’s decision to stay at Tottenham two summers ago caused City to pursue other options such as Erling Haaland, while Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United was brief and controversial.
Assuming that Tottenham refuses to let go of Kane, the player himself is unlikely to cause any controversy. Erik ten Hag has identified Kane as his top choice for a new striker, acknowledging the value he brings to the team.
However, the decision to pursue Kane will ultimately depend on financial considerations, which will require careful analysis by those in charge.
For Manchester United, the most important numbers are the ones related to Kane’s scoring ability over the course of multiple seasons. Kane himself has set his sights very high in this regard.
During the summer before last, Kane attracted attention when he publicly discussed his goals and aspirations in a candid interview with former Manchester United captain Gary Neville on their show “The Overlap.” This interview shed light on Kane’s motivations, which could be why Erik ten Hag is now optimistic about the possibility of bringing Kane to Old Trafford.
In one snippet, the Tottenham striker said: “I’m not afraid to say that I want to be the best. I’m not afraid to say that I want to get on the level that Ronaldo and [Lionel] Messi got onto.”
He continued: “That’s my ultimate goal, to be winning trophies season-in, season-out and scoring 50-60 goals season-in, season-out. If I give myself anything lower then when I get to the end of my career I might feel like I could’ve given a little bit more, scored a few more goals.”
Even if Harry Kane falls short of his lofty goal of scoring 50 or 60 goals, his season’s tally of 22 goals in 38 games is still impressive.
However, his lack of trophies for club and country throughout his career could be something he will never be able to reconcile with. Therefore, he must prioritize his own interests this summer as Manchester United seeks to secure him as their new number nine.
