Haaland looking for immediate Man City departure after finance scandal erupts and rift with Guardiola emerges
Erling Haaland could reportedly leave Manchester City next summer after the club was hit with 115 charges related to their finances.
The shocking announcement was made on Monday, with the Premier League charging the club from 2009 to 2018.
If found guilty, the investigation could have severe consequences for the Cityzens, ranging from fines to expulsion from the top flight.
Indeed, the allegations are said to have caused significant problems behind the scenes at City.
Pep Guardiola also stated that he would “quit” if the club’s leadership lied to him about their finances, so everything is currently uncertain.
In 2020, as a result of an investigation by UEFA, the manager stated,“When Manchester City is accused of something, like skipping the Financial Fair Play, I ask the board.
“They explain it to me and I believe them. But I tell them ‘if you’re lying to me, I’ll leave and I won’t be a friend anymore.’”
There have reportedly already been rifts between Guardiola and his players this season, with rumors that he and Joao Cancelo had an altercation before the latter joined Bayern Munich on the transfer deadline.
The absolute quality of Haaland, however, is beyond question. The striker has already scored 25 goals in 20 league appearances this season, putting him in position to break Alan Shearer and Andy Cole’s Premier League record of 34 goals in a single season.
Nevertheless, there are rumors that Guardiola never wanted Haaland at City, and it appears that the Norwegian international is already looking for a way out of the Etihad.
According to the Spanish publication Nacional, the forward is already questioning whether he made the best possible decision by joining Manchester City.
In recent days, some analysts have argued that Haaland’s presence actually weakens their team, despite his incredible scoring record.
City is currently five points behind league leaders Arsenal, who also have a game in hand, so there is a strong possibility that they will not win another title this year.
The report adds that Haaland’s current relationship with Guardiola is “terrible” and that he is seeking a “change of scenery” prior to the activation of his €200 million release clause in 2024.
According to the report, the Norwegian believes his next challenge will be in La Liga.
Real Madrid has previously expressed interest in the 22-year-old, but Barcelona is also in the running, with club president Joan Laporta “monitoring” his situation.
Real Madrid remains the favorite, however, due to their ongoing financial situation, should City allow him to leave.
Ultimately, this may depend on the penalties imposed by the Premier League if the club is indeed found guilty.
