Graham Potter warns Kai Havertz over Chelsea goal celebration in Everton draw
Graham Potter expressed disapproval of Kai Havertz’s goal celebration during Chelsea’s disappointing 2-2 draw against Everton.
Kai Havertz’s penalty kick seemed to secure Chelsea their fourth consecutive victory as he outsmarted English goalkeeper Jordan Pickford with only 14 minutes left in the game at Stamford Bridge.
However, Everton managed to score their first goal through Ellis Sims in injury time, benefiting from some uncharacteristically poor defending and goalkeeping.
Although Graham Potter was frustrated at losing two points, he also cautioned Havertz against repeating his actions of mocking Pickford after his goal celebration, which was the third goal he had scored in as many games.
“When players score, they have something like an out-of-body experience,” said Potter in his post match press conference.
“I didn’t score many myself so I wouldn’t know. You should enjoy the celebration, I don’t think you need to involve the opponent.
“That would be my perspective.”
The draw has virtually extinguished Chelsea’s chances of making a late surge to secure a top-four spot, and Graham Potter was disappointed by the way his team gave up their advantage in the final stages of the game.
“No, it wasn’t conscious”’ said Potter when asked if his team dropping deepar and deeper was at his request.
“As I said, Everton used their strengths well. They’ve got physicality and used (Abdoulaye) Doucourse and (Andre) Onana) to win long balls, second balls, throw-ins, set-pieces, and to create danger.
“Teams have always done that well under Sean (Dyche). It’s not easy to control it as well as you’d like.
“We lost a little bit of control for a short period of time and when we did, we conceded. That’s the frustrating bit.”
