Graham Potter to be without eight Chelsea players for West Ham as injuries persist

Graham Potter is welcoming back players to his Chelsea squad as the manager’s load begins to lighten.

The Blues are receiving a boost ahead of a crucial stretch that includes a London derby against Tottenham and two legs of Champions League play against Borussia Dortmund.

In addition to Reece James, Ben Chilwell, and Raheem Sterling returning against Fulham, additional players have returned throughout the week.

Denis Zakaria and Mateo Kovacic have also returned to training, while Wesley Fofana continues to train on the grass.

Despite the addition of Enzo Fernandez, the midfield poses the most questions for Potter.

Conor Gallagher and Mason Mount were frequently too far forward to receive the ball, preventing the Argentine from receiving much support from those around him.

Zakaria could assist with this, but he is not yet fit to play. Since returning from the World Cup, he has been one of the most pleasant surprises and has begun to provide the desired physical presence so frequently lacking in the center of the field.

Jorginho is now playing for Arsenal in London, putting pressure on Chelsea’s current roster to make it to the summer.

N’Golo Kante is nearing a return, but he still has a ways to go. Due to the nature of his contract status, there will be no rush to bring him back too quickly and risk another relapse.

Edouard Mendy’s return against West Ham is premature while he is still recovering from a broken finger.

Armando Broja is the other long-term absentee, but his season has already been prematurely cut short, and he won’t return until the following year, possibly not playing again until 2023.

Christian Pulisic has not yet recovered from the injury he sustained against Manchester City in early January; he remains sidelined.

As mentioned, Sterling returned against the Cottagers but suffered another injury prior to the trip to the London Stadium.

Potter disclosed his recent setback, stating, “We’ve had a little setback with Raheem, he is doubtful. He got a kick in training at the side of his knee.”

Fortunately for Potter, Kepa has been a capable replacement for Mendy and, based on recent months, appears to be the preferred starter regardless of fitness.

Kai Havertz was consistently selected over Broja prior to his injury, and he is backed by an expensively assembled supporting cast.

Both Joao Felix and Mykhailo Mudryk provide support and new offensive options. Noni Madueke’s brief appearance at Stamford Bridge thrilled fans, and he may face the Hammers.

Overall, Chelsea is still missing eight players due to injury, but the influx of players in January has helped to soften the blow.
