Graham Potter praised ‘fantastic’ Lewis Hall and insisted there was’much to like’ about Chelsea’s performance despite their Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Manchester City.

On Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium, 18-year-old Hall made his second career appearance for the Blues.

Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez’s second-half goals helped the Premier League champions advance to the fourth round of the competition, but the Chelsea teen was his team’s best performer on the evening.

Hall was unlucky not to record a goal, as his first-half attempt was saved by Stefan Ortega after he deftly feinted inside his opponent. Hall was a constant threat with his left-wing runs.

The City goalkeeper, who was the game’s MVP, also blocked a second-half attempt.

Potter, in response to Hall’s performance, told Sky Sports: “Lewis Hall did brilliantly. Fantastic performance. Great quality great effort. You can see he can take the ball, He took responsibility.

“Putting the ball in the net is the hardest thing and that’s all he didn’t do today but everything he did do was fantastic.”

The loss to City means Chelsea have now lost three of their last four games, with their only victory coming in a Champions League dead rubber against Dinamo Zagreb.

Despite his team’s early exit from the EFL Cup, Potter was pleased with his team’s performance.

“[There was] a lot to like” he said.  “We created some big chances and attacked well. We weren’t perfect, but did a lot right in the game”

“It was a pleasing performance, a step forward in terms of how we want to play. I’m disappointed with the result but happy with the performance.

“We had some big chances. You won’t get many bigger ones here. We had big courage and personality to try to play out. It is not easy here. The boys showed quality and courage. I liked a lot of what we did today.”

On Saturday, Chelsea will travel to St. James’s Park to face Newcastle United in their final match before the World Cup.
