Graham Potter has delivered an ultimatum to Romelu Lukaku on his future at Chelsea as the striker nears an exit.

After falling out of favour with Thomas Tuchel, the 29-year-old was extensively linked to a permanent move away from Stamford Bridge.

Lukaku failed to acclimate to the Premier League upon his return, and his time under the German quickly ran out, resulting in his demotion to the bench.

Due to Inter Milan’s spending limitations, the Italian giants were unwilling to pay Chelsea’s asking price for the striker.

Instead, the Nerazzurri opted for a loan for the entire season, and Chelsea negotiated a sum for Lukaku’s services.

The Belgium international will return to a new head coach at the end of the season following Tuchel’s dismissal, but his future at the club remains uncertain.

According to  Calcio Mercato, the west London club does not want to re-sign a striker who does not meet Potter’s standard requirements.

However, according to the source, Lukaku does not wish to return to Cobham training ground upon the conclusion of his Inter loan.

According to reports, Chelsea and the Italian giants have made first contact on a way for the Belgian to remain at the San Siro beyond the agreed-upon season-long loan.

Calcio Mercato adds that there are now two choices available: another loan or a fee of approximately £7 million.

Lukaku’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires in 2026, although as previously said, his future with the Blues under Potter is uncertain.

And, having left Chelsea on poor terms, a return seems impossible regardless of the new manager’s intentions.

Last month, while speaking to  DAZN Italia, the £60,7 million-rated talisman admitted that he was angry about his departure.

He also said that he does not anticipate his status at Chelsea to improve.

“The season at Chelsea gave me extra motivation to do even better than before,” Lukaku said. “I think in a year, people have forgotten what I can do on the pitch. This is a kind of anger that I have inside of me.

“When I left, I had in mind to get a rematch with Chelsea. When I was young, I was at Chelsea for eleven years, and I wanted to come back to be a protagonist.

“After the last game, I started thinking about what the best situation was for me. The season for me at Chelsea was difficult, and I think things would not improve in the future and so I decided to come back here.”
