Graham Potter explains Mykhailo Mudryk substitution amid injuries concern

Mykhailo Mudryk made his  first start for his new club, Chelsea, on Friday night at Stamford Bridge against west London rivals Fulham.

The Ukraine international moved to Stamford Bridge in January for a transfer fee that could increase to £88.5 million.

Given the rumors of a transfer to Arsenal and the fact that the Gunners had numerous offers rejected by Shakhtar Donetsk, the news came as a complete shock.

In acquiring the 22-year-old, however, it was the Blues who prevailed, as the new ownership established their dominance in the market.

Mudryk was given his first minutes on the road at Liverpool in a scoreless draw, but he excelled in the few touches he was afforded.

The team had a week off from FA Cup competition, allowing for additional preparation prior to his debut against Fulham.

Noni Madueke, who joined in January from PSV Eindhoven, made his debut from the bench after being substituted at halftime.

Despite displaying some flashes of speed and ability,  Mudryk failed to capture the attention of the media and was substituted at halftime.

Gary Neville, commenting on Sky Sports, posed the question of whether or not the forward was injured  “I didn’t think he would but he has [subbed Mudryk off], it’s a brave one. Certainly does not help the confidence of a new signing,” before questioning if he was injured.

Despite this, it does not appear that Mudryk was injured, as Potter confirmed that the winger was suffering from an illness.

He told BeinSports that: “Mudryk had a cold.” despite deciding to start the player in the clash from the start.

On top of his illness, it remains to be seen if the forward will play against West Ham the following week. He has limited playing time and is battling an illness.
