Daniel Sturridge had his most successful season at Liverpool in 2013/14, where he contributed to the Reds’ near-win of the Premier League title.

During that season, Sturridge scored 27 goals from open play, which remains his highest tally for a single campaign in England.

However, Erling Haaland’s impressive performance in Manchester City’s 3-1 win against Arsenal on Wednesday night saw him score his 28th non-penalty goal of the season, surpassing Sturridge’s personal record in just over half a season.

Erling Haaland, who had already surpassed Romelu Lukaku’s record of 25 non-penalty goals in a single season (2016/17) and Sadio Mane’s record of 26 (2018/19), scored Manchester City’s third goal of the night, helping his team secure the victory.

With this goal, Haaland moved level with Sergio Aguero on 28 non-penalty goals for a single season.

A Visual Game on Twitter has compiled data showing that Erling Haaland needs just two more goals to match Wayne Rooney’s record of 34 non-penalty goals in a Premier League season (2009/10), three more to equal Luis Suarez’s record of 31 (2013/14), and four more to tie Thierry Henry’s record of 32 (2003/04).

Alan Shearer, who is the Premier League’s all-time top scorer with 260 goals, scored 34 non-penalty goals in a single season in 1995/96, which is only five goals ahead of former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres’ record of 29 (2007/08).

Robbie Fowler, another Liverpool legend, is next on the list with 28 non-penalty goals in a single season (1995/96), followed by Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored 31 non-penalty goals in 2007/08.

Mohamed Salah currently holds the record for the most non-penalty goals in a Premier League season, with a staggering 43 goals in his first full season at Liverpool, which was achieved in just 46 full matches. This puts him ahead of Andy Cole, who scored 41 non-penalty goals in the 1993/94 season, with Harry Kane in third place with 38 non-penalty goals in 2017/18.

However, Erling Haaland has a good chance to make history with 15 more Premier League games to go, as well as Manchester City still competing in the Champions League and the FA Cup. Haaland is currently only six goals away from breaking Salah’s record of 32 non-penalty goals in a 38-game Premier League season.
