Gerrard names the one Liverpool player he “used to love” playing with most at Anfield
Steven Gerrard, a Liverpool icon, has disclosed that Xabi Alonso was his most outstanding teammate during their time at Anfield.
They formed a midfield partnership for five years before Alonso left for Real Madrid in 2009.
Gerrard revealed that he appreciated the space given to him by Alonso to play a more attacking role.
Throughout his distinguished 17-year career in Merseyside, the ex-England international scored 185 goals and made 150 assists.
However, Gerrard also praised the current Liverpool skipper, Jordan Henderson, describing him as an unselfish leader.
During the filming of the documentary ‘When Stevie met Salah’, Steven Gerrard discussed the top footballers he had played alongside while speaking with Mohamed Salah.
“The best I played with? I used to enjoy playing with Jordan [Henderson], because Jordan was very self-less, he was a leader, he’d do a lot of running for me and I was older at the time so I needed Jordan’s energy,” said Gerrard.
“But if you’re talking about an individual player that I used to love was Xabi Alonso. Alonso used to allow me to play as a No.10. So, I could get more shots on goal, more goals, more assists.”
Mohamed Salah was not the only Liverpool player to shine recently. Jordan Henderson played a vital role in Liverpool’s massive 7-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday.
He was assigned to contain high-profile opponents such as Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in the midfield, a task he accomplished with great skill.
Henderson capped off a fantastic performance by providing the assist to Darwin Nunez, who scored Liverpool’s fifth goal of the match.
The victory leaves Liverpool three points behind the top four, with a game in hand over Tottenham, who are above them in the table.
Next up, Jurgen Klopp’s squad will travel to the Vitality Stadium to face Bournemouth in the Premier League, hoping to replicate last year’s 9-0 thrashing of the Cherries.
