Gary Neville identifies a manager who will never manage Manchester United if Solskjear is sacked
Gary Neville has dismissed any talk of Antonio Conte taking over as manager of Manchester United, claiming that he would not be a good fit at Old Trafford.
United were defeated 4-2 at Leicester City on Saturday, ending the club’s 29-game unbeaten run away from home.
Following four wins in their first five games, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team has struggled recently, going winless in their last three Premier League games.
Many managers have been mentioned as potential replacements for Solskjaer if the club decides to fire him.
Conte, who won the Premier League with Chelsea, is currently unemployed after leaving Inter Milan in the summer.
The former Italy manager led the Nerazzurri to their first Scudetto since 2010, but he left by mutual agreement.
Despite being a proven winner, Neville does not expect United to approach Conte and compares the situation to the failed Jose Mourinho appointment.
“Conte won’t be the manager at Manchester United I don’t think,” the Sky Sports pundit said on an Instagram live.
“I don’t think they’ll go for that option, personally. He’s a great manager but I think certain managers fit certain clubs and I don’t think Conte fits United personally.
“As I say, great manager but doesn’t feel right for me that one.
“I’m not into that – giving someone a squad. We tried that with Jose, ‘Give Jose a squad and we’ll definitely win the league.”
“We didn’t and in the end it was a mess and everybody wanted him out.”
Despite a troubling run and a style of football that hasn’t been particularly entertaining to watch, Solskjaer is thought to have the support of the United board.
Meanwhile, Conte had the opportunity to return to management in the summer but turned it down.
Explaining his reasons for the snub, he told Gazzetta dello Sport: “I look for the projects instead and I am ready to stay at home if something is not convincing me.
“It has to do with vision, honesty and principles. Generally, I like challenges and I’ve accepted many of them during my career.
“Even the top clubs I coached were never the favourites when I arrived.
“However, if there’s something that doesn’t convince me I prefer not to accept, regardless of the money.”
