Gary Neville aims slight dig at Chelsea owner Todd Boehly amid ownership ‘danger’ claim as Man United contemplate making a big move

Gary Neville has described US ownership in the Premier League as a “danger,” following reports that the Glazers want to sell a minority stake in Manchester United.

Many Premier League and EFL clubs are owned by American citizens and investment banks, and the Glazer family has come under fire in recent years, with the club’s debts reaching nearly £500 million last year.

On the field, the Red Devils and their new manager Erik ten Hag have had a difficult start to the season, and a lack of direct backing has prompted MUST (Man United Supporters Trust) to come out after the latest Brentford loss to demand change.

Many potential takeover candidates have emerged since then for a club with a £6 billion price tag on its shoulders.

Michael Knighton was the first to express his desire to conduct a “hostile takeover” of United.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe publicly expressed his desire to buy United this week, but reports soon emerged claiming the Glazers had already entered exclusive talks with US private equity firm Apollo for a minority stake in the club, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Ratcliffe was the billionaire who had his late bid for Chelsea rejected after attempting to gatecrash the entire Raine Group process.

Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital eventually bought the club from Roman Abramovich for £4.25 billion.

In the midst of Manchester United takeover speculation, former defender Neville has expressed concern about the ‘danger’ that US ownership groups pose to the league and has demanded action from the Premier League.

This could be interpreted as an indirect dig at Boehly and Clearlake Capital, an American investment firm.

He tweeted: “The US model of sports ownership is all about significant return on investment (at all cost ie Super League and Big Picture). The ownership model in England needs to change and US money is a bigger danger to that than any other international money. We need a regulator asap!”
