Gabriel Martinelli discloses who the fastest player is at Arsenal and it’s not him or Bukayo Saka
Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli has disclosed that left-back Nuno Tavares is the club’s fastest player.
Martinelli has had a productive season with the Gunners, scoring five goals and giving five assists in 19 Premier League appearances.
Brazil boss Tite has taken note of the gifted winger’s form, giving him his senior debut for the Selecao earlier this year.
Now, the 20-year-old has been debating who the club’s fastest player is, saying that Portuguese fullback Tavares is faster than himself.
“Yeah, I am (quick) but it’s not me,” he told the Premier League’s YouTube channel when asked if he was the quickest player in Mikel Arteta’s squad.
“I think it’s Nuno. Nuno is really quick.”
Tavares joined the north London club from Benfica last summer for a rumoured fee of £6 million.
Despite an outstanding start to his Arsenal career, the athletic defender has suffered in recent weeks, appearing unpredictable defensively until being dropped for Sunday’s 2-1 win over Leeds United.
Arsenal have been linked with a deal for Bologna left-back Aaron Hickey, with Corriere de Bologna recently saying that technical director Edu is interested in bringing in the £17million-rated Hickey to replace the ‘disappointing’ Tavares.
If he is given a start against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday evening, the 22-year-old will seek to prove his detractors wrong.
The Gunners now lead their local rivals by four points, and a win would guarantee them a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League, a competition they have failed to qualify for in each of the previous five seasons.
