Gabriel Jesus doing no favours for Liverpool as key transfer move could be blocked
Chelsea can take inspiration from Gabriel Jesus’ example when it comes to making a decision about Mason Mount’s future. Liverpool are reportedly interested in Mount, who has only 18 months left on his contract.
The young footballer, who graduated from the academy of Stamford Bridge, has dropped down in the team’s hierarchy and may soon leave the club unexpectedly. Several new midfield signings have led him closer to the exit than ever before.
Liverpool is interested in signing the English playmaker, but Manchester City’s past decision to allow Jesus to join Arsenal could affect their pursuit. Jesus was in a similar situation as Mount and had to find a new challenge after being demoted in Pep Guardiola’s plans due to the signing of Erling Haaland.
In hindsight, City may regret their decision, as Jesus has played a crucial role in Arsenal’s surprising Premier League title challenge, with Mikel Arteta’s team now eight points ahead of City.
Despite being sidelined with a knee injury he sustained during the World Cup for much of the last few months, Jesus has managed to score five goals and provide six assists in 16 Premier League matches.
His input has been crucial in putting Arsenal on the verge of winning the league title, surpassing his former club. The 25-year-old has played a significant role in his team’s success despite his injury setback.
Chelsea might reconsider allowing Mount to move to Liverpool, considering the possibility of Jesus, a former player, coming back to hurt them. Liverpool is reportedly planning to revamp their midfield in the upcoming transfer window, with Mount and his England teammate Jude Bellingham being their top targets.
However, Chelsea would not forgive themselves if Mount played a pivotal role in Liverpool beating them to a trophy. If Mount decides to seek a fresh start elsewhere, the Chelsea management would prefer that he reunites with Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich.
“He’s had niggling injuries and noise and speculation. He’s a professional, a top professional and a good lad,” Chelsea boss Graham Potter said of Mount on Friday.
“Sometimes in your career things aren’t optimal and you have to act well and that’s exactly what he’s done.”
If Chelsea were to allow Mount to move to Liverpool or any other rival club, it would be a significant risk for them, as it would mean strengthening their opponent’s squad.
The club would face significant criticism and backlash from their fans and the football community at large, which could harm their reputation and future dealings in the transfer market. Therefore, they need to consider this aspect before making any decisions regarding Mount’s future.
