Gabriel Jesus: Arsenal confirm signing of Manchester City striker, shirt number confirmed
Gabriel Jesus has been signed for £45 million by Arsenal.
The Manchester City striker has signed a five-year contract in north London, becoming Mikel Arteta’s fourth signing this summer after Marquinhos, Matt Turner, and Fabio Vieira.
After the exits of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette in the previous two transfer windows, Jesus had entered the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium.
The 25-year-old was given the No.9 shirt previously worn by Lacazette and will fight with Eddie Nketiah for a starting slot through the middle of the attack, but he is capable of operating in a wider position as well.
The attacker, who has 56 Brazil caps, joined City as a teenager in January 2017 from Palmeiras.
During a trophy-laden five-and-a-half-year spell in Manchester, he won four Premier League crowns, three League Cups, and an FA Cup.
Gabriel Jesus Arsenal shirt number confirmed
“Gabriel will wear the number 9 shirt and will join up with the Gunners squad for pre-season training soon,” Arsenal said in a statement.
Jesus previously worked with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta at the Etihad Stadium as Guardiola’s assistant coach. And the teenage attacker has previously stated his respect for Arteta.
Speaking about the Arsenal coach back in 2019, Jesus said: “He’s helped a lot of players. When I want to do finishing after training, I tell him and he comes and helps me.
“So he is really fantastic for us. All the players know that — everyone knows that in the club. He is a fantastic guy and fantastic manager.”
