Frenkie de Jong replies to “join Liverpool” transfer request during World Cup meeting

Frenkie de Jong replies to “join Liverpool” transfer request during World Cup meeting

Frenkie de Jong disclosed that he was urged to “join Liverpool” shortly after arriving in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup.

The Dutch midfielder is expected to play a pivotal role in his country’s quest to win their first-ever World Cup, beginning with Monday’s Group A opener against Senegal.

On the international stage, De Jong is at the forefront of Louis van Gaal’s objectives. However, the same cannot be said for his club football.

The 25-year-old is on the fringes of Barcelona’s starting eleven, as manager Xavi continues to favor other center midfielders. De Jong came close to leaving the Nou Camp in the summer, but resisted a move; now, Liverpool supporters are clamoring with him to finalize a transfer.

Thursday, De Jong and his Dutch teammates visited with migrant workers who have contributed to the construction of the World Cup infrastructure and facilities in Qatar, notably the stadiums. And one of the workers seized the opportunity to reveal his true nature by making a cheeky request of the man from Barcelona.

“It was special for them (migrant workers), but also for us,” De Jong told Dutch outlet AD.NL (via Liverpool Echo ). “It gives us energy and joy.

“A lot of people came and there was no time to have a personal conversation. One guy told me I had to join Liverpool! We loved doing this, but now the focus goes to Senegal.”

The future of De Jong has been uncertain for months as Barcelona attempted to pry the midfield maestro from Ajax. Barca desired to rid themselves of the youngster’s salary and were willing to sell him, with Manchester United and Chelsea in transfer talks.

However, De Jong is still owed a substantial amount in deferred salary, perhaps £15 million, and he was insistent on remaining at Barcelona. Although he has remained in Spain, De Jong has only made 13 appearances so far this season, and his future role in Xavi’s plans remains uncertain.

ESPN cites Liverpool’s desire to pursue De Jong as a response to the Reds’ need for midfield reinforcements. The Reds are rumored to have contacted De Jong’s representatives about a prospective trade, but would have to pay a hefty transfer fee to acquire him.

United and Chelsea had both agreed to initial £63 million deals with Barcelona in the summer previous to De Jong’s announcement that he would not be departing. The anticipated departure of Barca captain Sergio Busquets at the conclusion of the season could be influencing De Jong’s desire to maintain a starting position.

Xavi is allegedly still keen in bringing in a straight replacement for Busquets, which might persuade De Jong to consider a transfer elsewhere, with the possibility of lining up alongside international teammate Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool being an appealing alternative.
