Frenkie de Jong Man Utd snub could haunt him following Van Gaal’s latest comments ahead of World Cup

Frenkie de Jong may regret turning down a move to  Manchester United  as he tries to make the Netherlands World Cup squad.

The Dutchman was one of the main transfer sagas of preseason but stayed at Barcelona after declining to join United.

United agreed a deal with Barcelona but De Jong’s desire to stay and fight cost them his signature.

The former Ajax midfielder has only played infrequently for Barcelona since the transfer market closed, which could hurt his chances of starting for the Netherlands in Qatar later this year.

Louis van Gaal stated on Tuesday that De Jong’s inconsistent playing time could be a concern ahead of the World Cup, with this month’s Nations League matches serving as the final warm-ups.

“It is true that many players called me in the transfer window,” began Van Gaal at a press conference. “But I always ended every conversation with: ‘This is my advice, but you make your own decision’.

“I am happy with the outcome. But I would be happier if Frenkie and Memphis [Depay] would play more than they are now.”

De Jong will want to impress against Poland on Thursday before returning to Barcelona after the international break.

Xavi has moved between De Jong, Sergio Busquets, Pedri, Gavi, and Franck Kessie in midfield this season.

United’s pursuit of the Dutch playmaker, who is contracted to Barcelona until 2026, remains to be seen.

After giving up on De Jong in the summer, United signed Casemiro, but Erik ten Hag may want to add another central midfielder before next season.

After spending over £200m on new players in the summer, United’s manager is expected to be awarded at least £75m in January.

Ten Hag’s midseason budget might jump by £25m if Cristiano Ronaldo leaves United at the end of the year, boosting their chances of securing De Jong if they attempt again.
