Frenkie de Jong, a midfielder for Barcelona, has stated that he will remain at the Nou Camp next season.

Manchester United  are interested in signing the midfielder, with Erik ten Hag eager to revive their Ajax relationship.

The pair formed a solid friendship after helping the Dutch giants to the 2019 Champions League final before De Jong’s departure six months later.

Ten Hag is anticipated to rebuild the squad this summer, with midfield recruitment being a top goal.

When Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, and Paul Pogba leave United next month, the 52-year-old will inherit a team with scant resources in the centre of the pitch.

United are thought to be looking for a dominant midfielder, with names like Ruben Neves, Kalvin Phillips, and Declan Rice being linked with transfers.

However, De Jong’s relationship with Ten Hag is regarded to be a deciding factor in his search for new employees.

The Manchester Evening News stated earlier this month that the Reds were considering a £75 million move.

Barcelona had a disappointing season after a horrible start to the season before being ousted from both the Champions League and the Europa League. Under Xavi, they were able to rescue a second-place finish in La Liga.

De Jong, on the other hand, understands that the paying supporters want much more from their team.

And, in an Instagram post about it, he seemed to imply that he would be staying in Spain next season.

On Tuesday, he wrote: “It has been a disappointing season for us. We couldn’t achieve the goals we set at the beginning.

“But I want to thank the fans for their support this year. We will work hard to do better next season.”

This may come as a surprise to Ten Hag, but the Dutchman still has time to find other targets.

His ears may have been perked up by Neves’ comments following Wolves’ 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday, in which he questioned his future at Molineux.
