France World Cup dream in jeopardy as third member of squad falls ill prior to the final against Argentina

France World Cup dream in jeopardy as third member of squad falls ill prior to the final against Argentina

Kingsley Coman is doubtful for the World Cup final after missing training due to illness, making him the third member of the France team to contract the illness.

Les Bleus face Argentina at Lusail Stadium on Sunday as they attempt to win their second consecutive World Cup, having won in Russia 4.5 years ago. The team of Didier Deschamps qualified for the final with a 2-0 victory over Morocco, courtesy of goals from Theo Hernandez and Randall Kolo Muani.

Adrien Rabiot and Dayot Upamecano were both omitted from the starting lineup against Morocco due to illness, which has begun to spread around the French camp.

The two fell ill due to the constant air conditioning in Qatar and were not risked for the match against the Atlas Lions, despite being listed on the bench.

Now, L’Equipe has reported that Coman has contracted influenza after he began experiencing flu symptoms before Wednesday’s match. As a result, the Bayern Munich winger did not play and missed lunch with his teammates. Coman also missed France’s Thursday evening recuperation practice.

Rabiot is scheduled to resume running, and Upamecano will participate in the session, as both are feeling better after a bout of illness. Olivier Giroud, Antoine Griezmann, and Kylian Mbappe had minor injuries against Morocco, but are expected to recover in time for the championship match.

Deschamps said: “Coman also had a fever this morning. In Doha, the temperatures have dropped a bit and you still have air conditioning on all the time. We have had a few cases of flu-like symptoms.

“We are trying to be careful so that it does not spread and the players have put in a great effort on the pitch and obviously their immune systems suffer. Dayot Upamecano felt bad immediately after the game against England. It happens when you exert yourself so much, your body weakens and you are more prone to getting these viruses.

“We’re taking all the necessary precautions, we’re trying to make sure it doesn’t spread, but viruses are of course infectious and we have to take precautions against them. We’ll separate him from the others and from Adrien as well.”

It is not believed to be MERS, which is commonly referred to as “Camel Flu” (Middle-Eastern Respiratory Syndrome). Coman will be fit to make the final roster, as will Karim Benzema, who might make a miraculous return to the camp before the match against Argentina.

Benzema was ruled out of the FIFA World Cup after suffering a thigh injury on the day of the competition in Qatar. However, he has returned to Real Madrid training and could be called upon by Deschamps, who did not replace him in their 26-man squad.
