Football madness as Arsenal star ‘snuck back onto the pitch’ in heavy fog after being red-carded, with the opponent playing with up to 15 players
The agonizing pressures of professional football always seem to compel gamesmanship out of the most honest of people.
Winning is required; ‘participation’ is discarded, and there are no depths too deep if the potential to obtain an edge, no matter how unfair, presents itself.
In 1945, Arsenal displayed this during a friendly against Dynamo Moscow.
The Gunners played the Russian titans at White Hart Lane, of all places, in a match that became one of the most bizarre in football history.

Fortunately, all of the north Londoners’ and Dynamo Moscow’s misbehaviors were literally clouded over.
This absolutely extraordinary affair took place in the most outrageous of weather circumstances, fittingly.
A dense fog developed on White Hart Lane, making it nearly impossible to see the pitch from the bleachers.
Despite several requests to halt the game and surrender to the weather, the referee insisted on continuing.
With the fog blocking any and all views of the happenings, Arsenal made full most of the situation.
An Arsenal player who was issued a red card, despite the fact that sight was limited, managed to blend into the fog to the point that he re-entered the field of play without the referee noticing.
He walked off the field before slipping back on and hiding out of the referee’s line of sight, which wasn’t far.
But, just in case you thought Arsenal had the upper hand, Dynamo Moscow had a clear advantage. They, like Arsenal, took advantage of the difficult conditions by making a substitute without pulling a player off.
Spectators at the game report the Russians had up to 15 players on the field at one point as they continued to bring fresh players onto the field. The referee soon abandoned the footballing circus.
The game was called off after the Arsenal goalkeeper knocked himself unconscious by running into his own goalpost. It was a lyrical conclusion to a ludicrous competition that should never have been allowed to take place.
