At the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, the competition for the Golden Boot, which is awarded to the tournament’s highest scorer, has begun.
At Qatar 2022, the world’s best footballers, including some of the sport’s legends, will compete for the elite trophy.
Thomas Muller of Germany has scored 10 World Cup goals over four tournaments, the highest among all players competing in Qatar (2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022).
Intriguingly, another German, Miroslav Klose, owns the record for the most goals scored in FIFA World Cups, with 16 goals scored throughout four tournaments (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014).
Klose is closely followed by the former Brazilian forward Ronaldo, who scored 15 goals.
Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal became the first player since 2006 to score in five consecutive World Cups at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The striker scored his first goal in Qatar in the opening match against Ghana by converting a penalty kick. Ronaldo has already scored eight goals.
Cristiano Ronaldo holds the record for the most goals scored by men in international football.
Lionel Messi of Argentina and Luis Suarez of Uruguay are close behind with seven goals each in FIFA World Cup matches.
The Golden Boot race at Qatar 2022 began with Enner Valencia of Ecuador, who scored twice in the opening match against the hosts.
In the previous 21 FIFA World Cups, more than two goals have been scored every game on average.
And with 64 matches set for the 2022 World Cup, the competition for the Golden Boot will be intense.
