FIFA make major Club World Cup ruling that will frustrate Chelsea
According to reports, FIFA is planning to postpone the Club World Cup until next year.
Chelsea, who won the Champions League in May, were scheduled to compete in the prestigious tournament from December 9 to December 19.
However, due to the current state of the coronavirus pandemic in Japan, the country has been forced to withdraw as a host due to safety concerns.
With the rate of infection in Japan continuing to rise, the country and FIFA have understandably played it safe and prioritized the safety of the players.
FIFA has yet to confirm an alternative host for the competition, but it is expected that at their next council meeting on October 20, they will make a decision on when and where it will now take place.
According to the Mirror, it will most likely be switched until early 2022, but there is no firm date as of yet.
Chelsea are waiting to hear how it will affect their schedule, as they were originally scheduled to miss several Premier League games to participate.
According to the report, FIFA is committed to the tournament and will find a new host in the coming weeks.
South Africa, Qatar, and Brazil have previously expressed interest, but the latter is believed to have withdrawn.
Liverpool, the Blues’ Premier League rivals, won the competition in 2019 and made a global statement in doing so.
Chelsea will be hoping to do the same when given the opportunity, but will be frustrated by the decision FIFA may have to make.
