Strikers have a significant advantage if they can sprint past their marks onto through balls, whilst defenders must have a good turn of pace to keep up.

Of course, distance speed is only one component of a player’s arsenal; they must also have strength, conditioning, game intelligence, and ball ability. Nonetheless, a powerful sprinter has a firm foundation upon which to expand.

So, who are the Premier League’s fastest players? We examine the top speedsters in the division.

Darwin Nunez of Liverpool set the quickest peak speed in the 2022-23 Premier League season, reaching 36.5 kilometers per hour against Fulham in August 2022.

Nunez is head and shoulders above the competition, with Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli and Manchester United full-back Diogo Dalot coming in second and third with top speeds of 35.9 km/h and 35.8 km/h, respectively.

Allan Saint-Maximin of Newcastle United reached a top sprint speed of 35.7 km/h, while Jack Stacey of Bournemouth reached a top sprint speed of 35.6 km/h.

Manchester City forward Erling Haaland is yet to appear in the top speeds for 2022-23, which may surprise onlookers who have been pleased with the striker’s sprinting.

Nunez’s top speed in the 2022-23 season is comparable to Antonio Rudiger’s top speed in the 2021-22 season, which was set at 36.7 km/h while playing for Chelsea.

During the same campaign, Mohamed Salah’s fastest speed was 36.6 km/h, while Adama Traore also reached that speed.

Manchester City defender Kyle Walker is widely regarded as the Premier League’s quickest player after reaching a high speed of 37.8 km/h in the 2019-20 season, however the England international may have lost a few yards in the intervening years.
