Fabio Vieira makes a promise to Gunners fans after joining Arsenal from FC Porto
Fabio Vieira has vowed to work as hard as he can now that he has completed his transfer from FC Porto to Arsenal.
The midfielder is the Gunners’ second signing of the summer transfer window, following the acquisition of Brazilian forward Marquinhos from Sao Paulo.
FC Porto stated in a statement that Arsenal would pay an initial €35 million (£29.9 million) for Vieira, with the sum rising to a potential €40 million (£34.2 million) with add-ons.
The 22-year-old was a crucial member of the FC Porto team that won the Portuguese league title last season, scoring six goals and creating 14 assists in 27 appearances.
Last season, he also had two assists in European tournaments for FC Porto and one goal in the Taca de Portugal.
Vieira has now spoken out about his intention to move to The Emirates this summer, stating that he will do everything in his power to assist Mikel Arteta’s club succeed next season.
Speaking in an interview quoted by The Daily Mirror, Vieira said: “I was always happy at Porto but this chance is important for any professional. I have always watched the Premier League on TV.
“Playing in the Premier League won’t be easy and I promise only to work, work, work.
“My agent worked on the deal between the two clubs and I accepted the deal because it was important for all parties.”
Vieira came up through the FC Porto youth system and played 75 games for the Portuguese club’s first squad, scoring 10 goals.
He has made 21 appearances for Portugal’s Under-21 team, scoring 13 goals in those games. Vieira was also named tournament MVP in last year’s European Under-21 Championship.
