“Exceptional” – Guardiola waxes lyrical about key Liverpool and Man City stars ahead of crunch encounter

Pep Guardiola praises Liverpool and Manchester City’s ‘outstanding’ full-backs.

Pep Guardiola emphasized the exceptional caliber of full-backs that both clubs possess during the pre-match news conference before of the Manchester City vs. Liverpool match, as reported by ManchesterCityFC.com

The contemporary game has evolved significantly, with wing-backs and full-backs becoming essential components. These players, who are mostly regarded pseudo-wingers or outright attackers, are expected to be more creative.

The Spanish manager took advantage of the chance to give his thoughts on the matter.

He also emphasized how full-backs can take advantage of areas that are typically left available by teams who aim to play more deeper in a compact scenario.

In an interview prior to the Manchester City vs. Liverpool game, the former Barcelona manager discussed the necessity of full-backs in today’s game.

“Yeah you’re right, today the position of full-backs is more important in how teams must play. When teams play narrow and deep, the spaces are there, and when they have quality. I agree, the four full-backs on Sunday, they are exceptional, you are right.”

Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have both benefited greatly from having tremendously gifted full-backs on their teams.

The Citizens primarily use Joao Cancelo as a left-back and Kyle Walker as a right-back.

While this duo has shown a lot of promise, our Liverpools full-backs have been on another level this season.

Andrew Robertson has 14 assists in 36 games for Liverpool, whereas Cancelo has only eight assists in 41 games for Manchester City.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is having one of his more productive seasons in terms of goal contributions, with two goals and 17 assists in 36 appearances for the Reds across all competitions thus far this season.

Walker, on the other hand, has only managed one goal and two assists in 28 games for the Citizens this season in all competitions.

This demonstrates that  regular Reds  fullbacks have made more significant direct goal contributions this season. Trent and Robertson both grew tremendously under the former Borussia Dortmund manager.
