According to reports, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is likely to make a comeback to coaching by joining Gareth Southgate’s coaching team for the England football team.

The former Chelsea player, who represented the Netherlands in 23 international matches from 1998 to 2002, is said to be in advanced discussions to take over from Chris Powell in the Three Lions’ coaching staff.

Hasselbaink has been away from football since September when he resigned as the manager of Burton, who were in the last place in League One at the time.

However,  Sky Sports reports that he is now ready for a quick comeback to the sport as he prepares to replace Powell, whose contract has ended.

Powell had been involved with the England team during the previous two major tournaments, but has decided to step down to concentrate on his role as the head of coaching at Tottenham’s academy.

It has been reported that Hasselbaink and the Football Association are currently in advanced discussions regarding his potential appointment to join Gareth Southgate’s support staff.

According to the news outlet, it was Southgate who approached the ex-Chelsea striker about the role. However, legal formalities for the deal are yet to be completed.

Hasselbaink commenced his managerial journey in Belgium with Royal Antwerp in 2013, where he resigned after a single year in charge.

After leaving Royal Antwerp, Hasselbaink became the manager of Burton in 2014. In his first tenure, he led the club to win the League Two title.

In 2015, he moved to Championship side Queens Park Rangers, but he was sacked after just ten months in charge, with the team in 17th position.

Following his departure from QPR, he took over as manager of Northampton. However, his time at the club was brief, and he left after less than a year. Hasselbaink then made a return to Burton in January 2021.
