Erling Haaland ‘agrees terms’ on Man City transfer to become Premier League’s highest earner
Erling Haaland has reportedly agreed to terms with Manchester City to become the Premier League’s top paid and relocate to the Etihad Stadium.
Since joining the Bundesliga heavyweights in the January 2020 transfer window, the striker has been a standout for Borussia Dortmund.
A release clause in his contract at the Black and Yellow will become activated at the end of this season, triggering considerable interest from numerous major clubs around Europe.
City, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain have all been linked with approaches for the 21-year-old as they aim to take advantage of what is expected to be a low-cost release clause.
Haaland is almost set to leave Signal Iduna Park, and his future location appears to be nearing completion.
According to the Daily Mail, City are close to signing Haaland as their next superstar.
The chase of Haaland is said to have taken a “major step” with terms agreed between the Premier League leaders and the Norwegian.
City are now anticipated to exercise the release provision in his contract in the near future.
Haaland will earn a sizable financial award for choosing the Etihad Stadium as his next home stadium.
According to the report, City are prepared to make him the highest-paid player in Premier League history.
Haaland is likely to earn more than £500,000 per week, putting him ahead of Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo.
Such a salary would also put him ahead of Kevin de Bruyne, who is now paid £385,000 per week.
It is predicted that Haaland would ‘likely’ sign a five-year contract with City within the following week.
Alf-Inge Haaland, who spent three years at City during his playing career, is claimed to have been “heavily involved” in the negotiations.
City will be hoping that Haaland brings the form that has made him such a success at Dortmund to Manchester.
This season, he has 25 goals in 26 appearances, including a double in Dortmund’s 6-1 thumping of Wolfsburg last weekend.
This brings his total to 82 goals in 85 matches since moving to Germany, a fantastic result given his season has been badly hampered by injuries this season.
If the transaction goes through as planned, City’s search for a striker will come to an end.
Last summer, they attempted to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur but were unable to do so because they refused to pay the London club’s asking price.
Pep Guardiola, City’s manager, will be hoping that a deal can be finalized in time for Haaland to make his debut during the club’s pre-season tour to the United States in July.
The Spaniard has previously stated that adding a striker is his top goal for the forthcoming transfer window.
“I think the club definitely needs a striker. We tried, but sometimes it’s not possible. We are not going to buy one for a number if they’re not going to give us something special,” Guardiola said at the start of March.
“I am a guy who is comfortable when we have 14, 15, 16 players and after five or six in the academy. We need a striker and I think the club is going to try. If it happens, it happens, but if it doesn’t, we’ll wait.”
