Erik ten Hag’s two-point Harry Maguire plan is expected to leave Glazers red-faced
Erik ten Hag has won the contest to become Manchester United’s next permanent manager, succeeding Ralf Rangnick at the end of the current campaign.
It’s a dream position for the Ajax boss, but it will take a lot of hard work and patience to make it a reality.
Ten Hag will be under pressure to deliver results from the moment he steps through the Old Trafford doors, and as a result, he must be prepared to make a number of potentially difficult decisions.
The selection of a captain to lead his Red Devils on the field will be high on the agenda.
As of now, Harry Maguire is Manchester United’s captain, although the England international has had a difficult season.\
According to the MEN, Maguire is in real danger of losing the captaincy next season, with Ten Hag apparently considering acquiring Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger, who could effectively replace Maguire at the back.
If Ten Hag does name a new United captain and basically banish Maguire from Old Trafford, the Glazers’ choice to fund Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be deemed a failure.
Solskjaer paid £80 million to sign Maguire from Leicester City in 2019, becoming him the world’s most expensive defender.
The then-United manager expected that the England international will lead the Red Devils for many years.
“Harry is one of the best centre-backs in the game today,” Solskjaer said at Maguire’s unveiling.
“He is a great reader of the game and has a strong presence on the pitch, with the ability to remain calm under pressure. He will fit well into this group both on and off the pitch.”
But Maguire hasn’t lived up to this hype in a Red Devils shirt and might be an expensive mistake if Ten Hag looks to spice things up when he comes in a few months.
Gerry Hamstra, Ajax’s technical manager, was recently asked about Ten Hag’s move to United and stated that the club is still doing everything possible to keep him in Amsterdam.
“There is interest for Erik ten Hag, that is normal. He has done fantastic,” Hamstra said on Sunday. “We did everything possible [to keep him at Ajax]. We were very busy with that. He reacted that he is focusing on Ajax now. We are preparing for two scenarios: Ten Hag might stay or might leave.”
