Erik ten Hag’s ruthless Man Utd punishment immediately after humiliating Liverpool 7-0 defeat
Erik ten Hag compelled his humiliated Manchester United team to sit in silence and hear Liverpool’s players celebrate their impressive 7-0 victory against their rivals.
Ten Hag wanted his crestfallen United players to endure the ecstatic scenes from Liverpool’s dressing-room and use it as motivation to avoid such a dismal performance in the future.
This meant that United’s top players, including Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Casemiro, and Raphael Varane, had to experience the indignity of listening to the celebratory cheers from Liverpool’s players and fans.
After subjecting them to the uncomfortable ordeal, Ten Hag reprimanded his players for their disgraceful defeat at Anfield – which happened to be United’s joint-worst defeat and the largest since 1931.
Similar to the hairdryer treatment used by former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Ten Hag strongly criticized his players and reminded them how fortunate they were to be returning to Manchester on the team bus, unlike the angry fans who had spent money and traveled to witness their disappointing performance.
Ten Hag also summoned his players to United’s training facility early the next day to commence the investigation into the disastrous match at Anfield.
The Manchester United manager, along with his staff, arrived at the Carrington training center at 7am, while the players arrived at 9am to confront the aftermath of the club’s most significant defeat in nearly a century.
According to a United source, Ten Hag was visibly angry and informed the players that they were fortunate to be returning on the team bus to Old Trafford, rather than facing the ire of the disappointed fans.
Furthermore, he cautioned them that there would be no second chances if they performed similarly in the future and that they could face demotion to the Under-21s team.
It has been reported that Ten Hag has informed his players to anticipate further sessions with sports psychologist Rainier Koers, who was recently recruited by the United manager.
The Manchester United manager places significant emphasis on the mental component of football and appointed performance psychologist Koers to collaborate with the players after concluding that they all needed to have a more robust mindset.
According to the United source, Ten Hag is determined to prevent the players from reliving the difficult times of the previous season, which is why he wants them to collaborate more with the sports psychologist.
Koers, who is also from the Netherlands, was present with United during their winter training camp in Cadiz during the World Cup break in December and reportedly visits the training ground a couple of times a week to work with the team.
