Erik ten Hag told to re-sign former Man Utd starlet and pair him with Marcus Rashford

Danny Simpson, a former defender for Manchester United, believes that the club should consider bringing Wilfried Zaha back to Old Trafford this summer.

If he decides to leave Selhurst Park this summer, there will be no shortage of suitors for Zaha, who is in the final six months of his contract.

The Ivory Coast international left south-east London in 2013 to join United, but made only four appearances under David Moyes before being loaned out to Cardiff City six months after his arrival.

Since his return to Crystal Palace the following season, Zaha has been one of the brightest talents in the Premier League, with Simpson naming Liverpool as one of the clubs in need of a player of his caliber.

And while he believes that numerous clubs will be interested in the 30-year-old, he would like to see United make a move for him, relishing the prospect of a partnership with Marcus Rashford.

“It’s a tough question, he can go wherever he likes especially on a free transfer in the summer,” Simpson, who came through the United ranks before winning a Premier League title with Leicester City, told Stadium Astro.

“I feel like Wilf plays better when he is the main man. I know he was a lot younger when he went to United, but if he goes to another top four top side he’s not going to be the main man.

“So it is interesting to see where he goes but I think somewhere like Liverpool could do with him because at the moment it is not happening for them.”

Sir Alex Ferguson’s final managerial hire before retiring was Zaha.

United reached an agreement with Palace in January of 2013, with the youngster remaining at Selhurst Park for the remainder of the season as Ferguson’s side won the league.

Simpson is eager to see Zaha return to Old Trafford and believes his time at the club would have been drastically different if Ferguson had remained.

“I would bring him back here,” Simpson said. “If you looking at Marcus Rashford as the No. 9 and Wilfried on the left, that is some firepower.

“It was Sir Alex Ferguson who signed him then he left. Moyes obviously came in and it didn’t work out.

“I do genuinely believe if Sir Alex was the manager when he signed we would have seen a different Wilfried Zaha at Manchester United.”
