Erik ten Hag telling reaction when asked about Man Utd transfer target Cody Gakpo

Erik ten Hag telling reaction when asked about Man Utd transfer target Cody Gakpo

Erik ten Hag could not help but smile as he answered to a new line of enquiry about Cody Gakpo, a transfer target of Manchester United.

Friday, prior to his team’s return to Premier League play against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, the manager of the Red Devils addressed the media.

There are only a few days left until the January transfer market begins, and rumors are rampant regarding who Manchester United could recruit to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, whose contract was canceled in November.

Gakpo, the PSV Eindhoven forward, appears to be the first target for Ten Hag, who has long admired his compatriot. This season, the 23-year-old leads the Eredivisie in goals (nine) and assists (12) and excelled for the Netherlands at the World Cup.

Last week, PSV manager Ruud van Nistelrooy stoked rumors about Gakpo’s future by admitting his team may be unable to block the player’s exit if a substantial offer is made. He said: “If I have the choice, I prefer [Gakpo to leave in] the summer, but it can also be now. You just know there comes a time when you can’t say no.”

Ten Hag was asked on Friday about Van Nistelrooy’s remarks and was eager to downplay United’s ties to Gakpo. He added with a grin on his face:  “There were many many good players in the World Cup. He (Van Nistelrooy) can say that about many players.”

As for Gakpo’s attitude on a transfer to United, the Eindhoven native left the door open to leave his boyhood club as early as January during his World Cup comments. At a press conference, he stated, “I’m focused now on the World Cup,” he said at a press conference.

“It’s always nice to hear [transfer rumours] but I just focus here and do my best. I don’t get shy about the rumours. But it’s a team sport, it’s not about one person.

“I prefer it to be about the team. It’s nice things that people write, but I’m not too concerned with that. Right now, I’m busy with the Dutch team. I’ll see what happens in the winter. In football, anything is possible.”

As a result of his three goals in the World Cup group stage, Gakpo’s status rose even more in the months after Manchester United’s failed pursuit of his signing against Southampton and Leeds.

The kid is enjoying some time away from the limelight ahead of the January transfer window, since PSV do not face Sparta Rotterdam until after the Eredivisie’s winter break.
