Erik ten Hag reveals whether Man Utd will face a ban from signing Ajax players
Erik ten Hag, the incoming manager of Manchester United, has clarified that he has no deal with Ajax that prevents him from signing any of his present players.
Following Ten Hag’s appointment, a number of Amsterdam players, including Antony, Jurrien Timber, and, most recently, Sebastien Haller, have been expected to accompany him to the Premier League.
However, the 52-year-old has refused to give Ajax fans any assurances that all of their players will be retained when the new season begins.
When asked if Ajax had put a prohibition on him signing their players, he informed Voetbal International: “No, there are no agreements about that. I now have very good players, but it’s not an issue at all.”
Following weeks of disruptive and intense speculation, Ten Hag’s hiring was ultimately made official after the 2-1 KNVB Cup final defeat to PSV Eindhoven.
Ajax can now concentrate on winning the third Eredivisie title of his career, which might happen as soon as this weekend…
The Dutch strategist is said to have warned United that if he is within 48 hours of an Ajax match, he wants the club to leave him alone so he can concentrate on the present task at hand.
And now he’s disputed that he’s already thinking about his future with United, reiterating his commitment to Ajax ending the season strong.
“I am not yet involved with Manchester United. I’m working on Ajax,” he added.
“I’m used to that [the excitement of him taking over in Manchester]. Ajax is also a big club, but it’s not about the media, it’s about football. I now have to perform with Ajax.”
When it comes to answering queries about the future of certain United stars, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Ten Hag takes a similar attitude.
The Portuguese international forward is set to stay at Old Trafford for the remainder of his contract, with United having the option to extend his stay by another 12 months at the end of next season.
“Those are questions for the future. We are in an important title race and an important week,” he said.
“I now want to focus my attention on that and not on Manchester United.”
Ten Hag was particularly pleased by viral video of United fans chanting for their new manager.
“I have seen that. It’s creative, well-found. Playful, fun,” Ten Hag added.
