Erik ten Hag hints at a worrying Man Utd transfer plan that conflicts with Ralf Rangnick’s stance
Erik ten Hag, speaking to the media on Monday, hinted to a concerning update on Manchester United’s transfer policy this summer.
The Dutchman took over as manager of the Red Devils after the end of the 2021/22 season, in which United finished sixth with their lowest points total in a Premier League campaign.
It’s possible that’s why Ten Hag’s first press conference as United manager was scheduled for the Monday after the season ended, but he made a strong first impression, speaking about a variety of topics, including Harry Maguire’s role as captain and his intentions for Cristiano Ronaldo next season.
Fans are particularly interested in United’s transfer plans, with a large turnover of the playing roster predicted this summer.
In April, Ralf Rangnick indicated that Manchester United could need up to ten new players, with a major number of the present first-team roster expected to be replaced.
However, Ten Hag hinted on Monday that this may not be the case, implying that his role will involve working with several of the current group to see if he can ‘extract more’ from them.
Asked about Rangnick’s comments, Ten Hag replied: “I am still in the process of analysing, setting conclusions. I am looking forward to working with these players.
“The season before, this squad were second in the league. We have huge potential and I think if we improve and work with them, I think we can get out more.”
The current United manager has admitted that recruitment will be a ‘essential component’ of his immediate plans, adding that he must now decide which players should stay or be moved.
“I analyse and we are starting the process,” the 52-year-old explained to reporters. “Before the season starts we now have a couple of weeks’ break.
“I will analyse and observe and set conclusions. But I keep them now for myself. We are in the previous season and have to go to the new season.”
When asked when he will see the majority of the first team, Ten Hag said it won’t be for another six weeks or so.
“I don’t speak with the players now,” he explained. “They need a break to reflect. But I am looking forward, I cannot wait.
“But I will speak to some players at the end of June and the majority at the beginning of July.”
