Erik ten Hag has one big selection headache ahead of Liverpool clash
Manchester United are looking to maintain their impressive form this upcoming weekend as they travel to Anfield, a place where they haven’t secured a win in the last six seasons.
Last season’s trip to Anfield was particularly difficult for them, but under the guidance of Erik ten Hag, both players and fans are feeling more confident.
United have only lost two matches in all competitions since the Manchester Derby in October 2021, and they head into Sunday’s exciting match in fantastic form.
With a 10-point lead over their rivals, Manchester United are potentially going into the Anfield clash as favorites for the first time in a while.
However, Erik ten Hag has one significant selection dilemma to tackle ahead of the match.
Wout Weghorst is expected to keep his streak of starting in every competitive game since joining the club, while Marcus Rashford, who is their highest scorer, cannot be left out of the lineup.
It has been observed that Wout Weghorst performs better when Marcus Rashford plays in the central position.
This arrangement allows Weghorst to drop behind Rashford and provide additional support as a midfielder.
Although this strategy has only been used a few times by Erik ten Hag, it has proven effective.
The only drawback is that Bruno Fernandes would then have to play on the right side of the field, while Alejandro Garnacho or Jadon Sancho would occupy the left side, and this would result in Antony being relegated to the bench.
Erik ten Hag could also choose to play Weghorst as the central forward, while Rashford and Antony play on either wing, and Bruno Fernandes plays his usual “number ten” position.
In terms of the rest of the team, the lineup almost selects itself. Casemiro and Fred are expected to anchor the midfield, while the defense will be composed of Luke Shaw, Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with David de Gea in goal.
