Erik Ten Hag has already issued warning to Jadon Sancho about Manchester United return

Erik Ten Hag has already issued warning to Jadon Sancho about Manchester United return

This past week’s return of Jadon Sancho to Manchester United  training has been met with widespread excitement throughout M16.

The 22-year-old had not been involved with the first team at Carrington since the end of October, when he last appeared for United in a 1-1 draw at Chelsea.

During the World Cup break, he underwent an individual training program in the Netherlands, while the rest of the squad not in Qatar underwent warm-weather training in Spain.

Erik Ten Hag was typically forthright when asked about Jadon Sancho earlier this month, stating that the winger was “not physically fit” to participate in full group training and continuing his own sessions at Manchester United’s training facility.

The 2021 summer signing was spotted in full first-team training for the first time in nearly three months on Thursday, and again on Monday, the day after a Premier League match. It is important to note that both sessions were with reduced groups.

Sancho’s presence in training prompted Ten Hag to inquire about his availability for the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.

The Reds had only two full days of rest between their trip to the City Ground and Sunday’s loss at the Emirates, forcing the manager to likely make several substitutions.

“No, all the players who were not available for the Arsenal game – so Dalot, Martial, Sancho – are also not available for tomorrow,” said the United manager in the latest warning to Sancho and fans that it may be a while before the England international is back on the pitch.

Before the trip to the Emirates, Ten Hag provided the clearest indication of how far Sancho must go before returning to first-team action.

“It [group training] is the next step – he still has a way to go,” the Reds boss told club media on Saturday. “He will know that, but when he makes this progress, then he can return in the group for games. Of course, we all hope that, because he is a great footballer. He has great skills that can help us.

“We have to cover so many games, but especially we need quality players, and he is definitely a quality player who can make the difference and we are expecting that from him.

“He is making the next step and because it is true, yesterday was the first time in the team training. But I think training was a final training before a game, so we will extend that in the coming days and weeks and then go step by step.”

Without a doubt, advancements are being made. However, the demands of the manager and the form of those in front of him could keep Sancho out of action for a longer period of time than many anticipated.

“We do need to manage expectations,” said one fan after the latest round of training pictures, and Ten Hag is having to do just that with both supporters and the player himself.
