Erik ten Hag delivers update on Raphael Varane as details of Manchester United star’s injury emerge
Raphael Varane, a Manchester United defender, reportedly suffered a major injury against Chelsea, which could put him out of the World Cup.
Varane was taken off early in the second half at Stamford Bridge after twisting his ankle while attempting to cut away a pass intended for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
He stormed off the field in tears, striking the corner flag in frustration and putting his shirt over his face to hide his tears.
He was replaced by Victor Lindelof, and United went on to snatch a late equaliser thanks to Casemiro’s first goal for the club.
All indications point to Varane suffering a major and lengthy injury, which could be devastating for the France international with the World Cup less than a month away.
United manager Erik ten Hag issued an update following the game, however exact specifics on the injury are still unknown.
“Nothing in this moment,” the Dutchman, who consoled Varane as he went off, said.
“We have all seen he came off but with an injury like this we always have to wait a minimum 24 hours and the medical staff can do their job and can set the diagnosis.
“I can understand [his reaction], we can all probably understand he will be emotional but he also has to wait, you don’t know.
“He’s experienced but the medicals have to do their job, have to make an assessment, set the right diagnosis and from there on come to the conclusion.”
However, according to sources, the injury may be as severe as initially thought, with L’Equipe journalist Loic Tanzi reporting that the 29-year-old ‘Is affected in the hamstrings. We do not yet know the severity of the injury.’
Varane had been in the greatest form of his United career up to this moment, and his absence would be felt not just by Ten Hag, but also by France manager Didier Deschamps, considering the important role he has played for his country over the last five years.
