Erik ten Hag backs Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer with the player not part of Man Utd’s future
Erik ten Hag has approved Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from Manchester United this summer.
Ten Hag is set to become the new manager of Manchester United after reaching an agreement in principle with club executives.
And the Dutchman has sanctioned Ronaldo’s departure after making it obvious that the United great is not in his long-term plans at Old Trafford.
The revelation may come as a surprise to United fans, who still regard Ronaldo as an iconic figure at the club despite his failures this season.
Last summer, Ronaldo, 37, shunned rivals Manchester City in order to make a spectacular return to United from Juventus in a £12 million transfer.
He was supposed to assist the fallen giants in reclaiming their prizes, but his second spell has turned into a nightmare.
United have never been in a title race and will finish the season without a trophy for the fifth year in a row.
Ronaldo has the option to extend his United contract for a further year, but he has been contemplating his future since the beginning of 2022 after becoming disillusioned with life at Old Trafford.
Despite having scored 18 goals, he has only scored four times in his past 13 games and has not always been in Ralf Rangnick’s starting lineup.
He is said to have visited with agent Jorge Mendes in Portugal at the end of last month to assess his possibilities for next season, and he will not be short of offers.
However, it looks that his decision to quit United has been made for him, with Ten Hag informing United executives that Ronaldo’s age and luxury status mean he will not be suited to the style of play and strategy he would try to apply once he takes over in June.
