Erik ten Hag agrees deal to become the next Manchester United manager
Erik ten Hag is poised to be named as Manchester United’s new manager on a three-year contract with a four-year option.
We reported earlier this week that Ten Hag, who was identified as the club’s preferred managerial candidate after a series of interviews, was close to reaching an agreement with the Old Trafford club – who fired Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November 2021.
Manchester United had intended to have at least finalized their managerial decision for next season by Easter.
This looks to be the case, though no formal notification is expected before Ajax takes on rival PSV Eindhoven in the KNVB Cup final this weekend.
Ten Hag has been told that he will have enough say in ‘all areas’ that he desires. In discussions with United football director John Murtough, he was told that the structure in place upstairs at Old Trafford is now built on a continental system, with the manager’s involvement factored into all decisions involving incomings, outgoings, and contract renewals.
The 52-year-old Dutchman has agreed to terms and is eager to get started.
In an ideal scenario for United, and if the process with Ten Hag goes well, the club anticipates a potential extension of his contract after two years, despite the fact that the first agreement will be for three years with a fourth option.
Official confirmation is expected after Ajax’s game on Sunday, with the Dutch giants hoping to put an end to speculation about Ten Hag’s situation so they can focus on the conclusion of the season.
The agreement might be signed the day following the final.
With Ajax four points ahead of PSV in the league with five games remaining, Ten Hag may leave Amsterdam with a domestic double to his name.
