Enzo Fernandez has made feelings on Man Utd move clear as they ‘overtake’ Liverpool

Enzo Fernandez, who won the World Cup with Argentina, is the subject of extensive transfer rumors, with Manchester United and Liverpool among the clubs interested in the Benfica midfielder.

In Qatar, Fernandez drew attention when he scored an outstanding goal in Argentina’s 2-0 group-stage victory over Mexico.

The midfielder earned his maiden international cap in September, and his insertion into Lionel Scaloni’s starting lineup for the group’s third match onwards revolutionized the team.

The 21-year-old was included in Argentina’s starting lineup for every following match in the tournament, including the dramatic final triumph over France, and was dubbed the competition’s Young Player of the Tournament in recognition of his outstanding performances.

United has reportedly surpassed Liverpool in its pursuit of the player. This follows a report that Liverpool and the player had reached a ‘pre-contract agreement,’ although the race is still very much alive.

Fernandez fits the profile of the midfielder the club is hoping to add, according to Brazilian media site UOL Esporte, which reports that United and the player are in negotiations. It would follow the club’s midfield additions of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen last summer.

Fernandez is essentially a defensive midfielder, but he is better renowned for his range of passes and his ability to provide the foundation for attacking plays and offensive team structure than for his typical role of sitting in front of the defense.

Benfica have already placed a £106 million release clause in the midfielder’s contract after signing him this year from River Plate. The player has previously discussed the effect that ties to elite clubs have had on his career.

Fernandez described to TyC Sports earlier this year, when he was still a River Plate player, how he was handling reports of a transfer despite interest from clubs like United. “Calmly, humbly, with a low profile. I try to work day by day to keep improving and growing.

“Luckily I’m finding regularity, continuity and my teammates and the coaching staff help me a lot. I handle it well. I’m grateful for the compliments, I read a lot of the messages they send and I’m happy. I will continue on this path.”

Liverpool has a considerable interest in the Argentine after missing out on Aurelien Tchouameni, who left Monaco for Real Madrid last summer.

The Reds are also monitoring Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham, who is being pursued by a number of Europe’s best clubs.
