English media ‘banned’ from Ajax press conference in the wake of Ten Hag to Man United rumours
Ten Hag is the overwhelming favorite to take over as United’s new manager.
Ajax has barred English reporters from attending their press conference on Saturday, preventing manager Erik ten Hag from being questioned about his future at Manchester United.
Ten Hag has been extensively associated with the position and is anticipated to be named the new manager soon after a series of constructive meetings with the club.
The Dutchman’s hiring is expected to be finalised before the end of the season, with current interim manager Ralf Rangnick moving into a consulting role.
Despite his much anticipated arrival at Old Trafford, the 50-year-only old’s concentration is on Ajax’s game against Sparta Rotterdam, where they hope to extend their four-point advantage at the top of the Eredivisie.
However, as Sky Sports’ Gary Cotterill stated, English reporters would not be permitted to attend, nor will questions be permitted to be asked in English.
“As Ten Hag was preparing his team to face Sparta Rotterdam, the media team were busily rejecting the applications from the English media to attend the post-match news conference,” he revealed. “There will be no radio, no newspapers.
“They don’t want him asked, in English, about Manchester United.
“Ajax say he needs to concentrate on winning another [Eredivisie] title. It’s by no means a given – they’re only four points ahead [of PSV] with six games to play.
“If he is to become the Manchester United manager then he is going to have to get used to answering tricky questions twice, sometimes even three times, a week.”
It comes following claims that the Dutchman has asked for full control over incomings and outgoings at Old Trafford, as well as the renewal of contracts.
Ten Hag wants assurances that he will be able to leave his stamp on the squad as he prepares for yet another reconstruction in order to return to the Premier League’s high echelons.
