Emerson Royal reveals player who has been a father figure to him at Spurs
Emerson Royal expressed his gratitude towards his Tottenham colleagues who have assisted him in settling into the team and improving in his position as a wing-back, as reported by Football.London in the matchday programme.
After a successful two-year loan stint with Real Betis, the Brazilian joined Tottenham from Barcelona in the summer of 2021. Nevertheless, he faced difficulties in reproducing the performance that had earned him recognition in Spain.
Royal was brought in as a full-back by Nuno Espirito Santo, and the change to playing as a wing-back under Antonio Conte was a challenging adjustment for him. As a result, he received negative feedback from Tottenham fans, and there were even rumors of him departing the club in January.
Despite speculations of his departure, it was actually Matt Doherty and Djed Spence who left Tottenham, while Pedro Porro was brought in to compete with Royal. Following these developments, the 24-year-old has excelled and has scored two goals in his previous six matches according to Transfermarkt.
On the support he has received, Royal said: “[Lucas and Richarlison are] both incredible players – two of the best. It is a great pleasure to share the pitch with them.
“Richarlison has only just got here but he already has a very important role to play. Here Lucas is a very experienced player, and he helps us a lot.”
“Richarlison and I are quite similar in the sense that we’re both young at heart, he is a young player, and we get on well together.
“The same with Lucas, but he is more of a father for me and Richarlison. During the times that us two get annoyed, Lucas is the one to calm us down.”
Royal was full of praise for his Brazilian compatriots, stating: “Given that mix, I’d say that both have played a very important role in helping me get to the level I’m currently at.
“[Cristian] Romero too. He has helped me a lot on and off the pitch. He is a great guy. It’s an honour to play with them all.”
Royal’s progress has been impressive, and it’s evident that Romero has had a positive impact on him, as he has become more assertive on the field.
Additionally, Royal seems to have integrated well within the team and has established himself as a well-liked member. He also appears to be at ease both on and off the pitch.
