Edinson Cavani’s anger with Jadon Sancho call exposed amid Man Utd crisis
When asked to give up his number seven shirt for new Manchester United signing Jadon Sancho, Edinson Cavani was ‘put out.’
During negotiations with the then-Borussia Dortmund forward in 2020, Manchester United allegedly promised Sancho the number seven shirt.
However, BVB refused to sell Sancho for less than £100 million, and the Red Devils were unable to sign the England international.
In the summer, Manchester United rekindled their interest in Sancho and agreed to pay £73 million to sign the former Manchester City graduate.
The number seven shirt was brought up again, as Sancho was wearing it at the time for Dortmund, and the forward was set to inherit it at Old Trafford.
However, by this point, United had already agreed to extend Cavani’s contract for another year after initially signing him as a temporary replacement for Sancho.
And Cavani wore the number seven shirt, which led to an awkward conversation between him and United chiefs.
According to The Athletic, Cavani was “put out” when asked to give up his number seven shirt for the new recruit.
As a result, Sancho was given the number 25 jersey at Old Trafford, while Cavani kept the number seven… until Cristiano Ronaldo arrived, of course.
Man United spoke to Cavani about the shirt number situation again after re-signing the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Cavani agreed to give up the number on this particular occasion and now wears 21.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said at the time: “Edinson has been remarkable.
“Cristiano spoke with Edinson and they spoke to each other. And to pass on his shirt just shows the respect he’s got for Cristiano, but also Cristiano speaking to Edinson shows the respect the other way. Two top, top professionals and players.”
