Edinson Cavani reveals how Boca transfer was real and why he opted for Man United stay.

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani declared last month he would be staying at Manchester United after huge speculations linking him to Boca Juniors’ move.

The 34-year-old striker entrusted his future to the club by signing a one-year deal extension, ending gambling over his future.

ESPN had published in April that Cavani was contemplating a summer move to Argentine side Boca Juniors.

Cavani has revealed this was a real option and says that talks were held.

Speaking in Uruguay, excerpted by TyC Sports: “The conversation with Boca was real.

“I had a clause that I could use at the end of the season and after a few months here in Uruguay, to see what is happening after almost two years of pandemic, to lose many things, not to be able to see your family … Everything begins to be very heavy and I analysed the idea of getting closer to my family.”

Cavani at this point had been going through a tough stretch at United, lacking games in February and March due to injuries, including both legs of Europa League ties against Real Sociedad and then AC Milan.

Speaking about his resolution to prolong his United contract, Cavani said he wanted to leave a lasting impact at Old Trafford.

Quoted by Depo Argentina, he added: “I coldly thought that I would not like to go through Manchester United and leave nothing behind, so I wanted to continue for another year and seek goals that motivate me.”

And we are grateful Cavani wanted to extend his deal. He finished the season in fantastic form, striking 17 goals in total.

Cavani played a huge part in United entering the Europa League final, scoring four goals in the semis, and he even netted in the final before the team succumbed on penalties.

Winning silverware would have been great for Cavani, and he will be even more resolved to success next summer, having come so close this time around.

The chance to play in front of fans at Old Trafford is also believed to have tempted Cavani. He has done so just once, in front of a crowd of 10,000, and scored an exceptional long-range goal. Hopefully, with near full stadiums returning next season, the experience will be even better.
