Eddie Nketiah sends warning to potential in demand new Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus

Eddie Nketiah has warned possible new Arsenal teammate Gabriel Jesus that he will ‘relish the challenge’ of increased competition and is willing to push for his starting spot.

Mikel Arteta’s top transfer priority this summer is to sign a new striker, with the Gunners having allowed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette to leave in the last six months.

Jesus is their main goal, and Arsenal are said to be in early talks with Manchester City about a £50 million deal, with the star eager to join them at the Emirates.

However, if Nketiah has his way, the Brazilian may not be able to walk straight into the first-team, with the young Arsenal forward – who was awarded a lucrative new contract – making it clear that he wishes to retain the starting spot he earned at the end of last season.

When asked about the possibility of Arsenal signing a new striker, Nketiah told the Telegraph: “Every team needs a squad to compete. The club is always looking for ways to strengthen.

“They have extended my deal and they have done that for a reason.

“Whoever comes in, you relish the challenge. You make them feel welcome, and then you fight and compete.”

Nketiah was a key player for Arsenal in the run-up to the Champions League last season, scoring braces against Chelsea and Leeds, as well as scoring on the final day of the season against Everton.

Despite playing in a supporting position for much of the season, the 23-year-old scored 10 goals in all competitions, scoring once every 113 minutes.

In comparison, Jesus, who is two years older, scored 13 goals and assisted 11 times for City last season, averaging a goal involvement every 107 minutes.
