Didier Drogba can assist Chelsea complete £26m transfer and deny Mbappe meeting
Todd Boehly, the owner of Chelsea, is planning to make some big signings in the upcoming transfer window to challenge Liverpool, and Didier Drogba, a legendary player for the club, may play a significant role in this.
In the past two transfer windows, Boehly has already spent over £60 million and has signed RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku on a pre-contract agreement.
Although a new goalkeeper and striker are the main priorities for the 2023/24 season, additional signings in other areas are not out of the question.
Enzo Fernandez may have arrived at the club for a record-breaking fee of £106m in January, but Chelsea are reportedly considering another midfielder, Borussia Monchengladbach’s Kouadio Kone.
The French Under-21 international has been attracting attention from several major clubs in Europe, thanks to his impressive performances in the German league.
Kone originally joined Gladbach in 2021 from Toulouse, and clubs such as Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich are said to be interested in him.
Borussia Monchengladbach may be under pressure to sell Kouadio Kone this summer as he has only two years remaining on his contract at the club’s stadium, Borussia-Park. SportBILD, via Gladbach Live, reported that the Bundesliga team has lowered their initial asking price from over £39m to around £26m.
Although Liverpool has expressed a keen interest in signing the midfielder, Chelsea might have an advantage over their competitors.
“Manu Kane is a player every league has an eye on,” the journalist Christian Falk told CaughtOffside.
“Everybody knows there that there is a big chance for other clubs to get him, so that’s why they’ve come up with this price-tag.
“£26.6m sounds like a crazy amount in England with the pound valuation and in Germany you say it’s €30m, which sounds normal for such a player.
“PSG also has an eye on him. We’ve asked him about his future and he told us that it would be interesting to play with Kylian Mbappé (but they can always play together in the national team). He’s been always dreaming of two clubs: one is Real Madrid and the other is Chelsea!
“Kone brought up Chelsea because he was a big fan of Didier Drogba, which explains his fascination with the London-based club. There’s nothing concrete at the moment but you see that he’s potentially going to leave in the summer.
“He’s already talking openly about new clubs and you see he’s interested in England, and there are many clubs that would be on the table. With Chelsea, he’s put another one himself in.”
It appears that Borussia Monchengladbach is getting ready for the future, as the funds generated from Kouadio Kone’s potential sale are expected to be used to strengthen Daniel Farke’s squad.
The club is reportedly set to lose Remy Bensebaini and Marcus Thuram, with the latter also linked to a move to Chelsea. As a result, Gladbach may reinvest the money from Kone’s sale to bolster their team for the upcoming season.
