While PSG suffered a shock 2-1 defeat in the hands of Nantes, Di Maria suffered another tragedy as his family is held hostage in a hostile robbery in his home. Di Maria was substituted in the 62 minute during the game, with his boss Ponchettino escorting him down the tunnel.
Leonardo who is the club’s sporting director made contact with Ponchettino just before the substitution. Di Maria left the stadium in tears after the boss told him what had ensued.
According to the initial reports from France, Argentina’s family members were at home during that robbery and were being held, hostage. The French RMC later made a report indicating that the incident at the player’s home had turned to be “extremely violent.”
Marca later reported that the family was being held hostage but was not harmed. PSG stars have in the past had their houses burgled at a time when the players are performing the club’s official duties. Di Maria’s case is one of the latest incidents that show how worrying such situations can get.
In February, while PSG was playing an away game against Lorient, Mauro Icardi’s home was burgled. Other players who have been victims of similar incidents while playing for the club include Thiago Silva, Dani Alves, and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.
In 2015 during Di Maria season at Old Trafford, the player’s home was also targeted. Former Manchester United player Wayne Rooney later said he believed that burglary incident was the reason why the Argentine struggled at Old Trafford.
It was also reported that another PSG player, Marquinhos was also on target on Sunday when his parents’ house was raided. Di Maria has two children and he is married to Jorgelina. He left the field i tears after he was told of the impending situation.
