‘Definitely out’: Klopp confirms Liverpool ‘hero’ will miss the Champions League final with ‘muscle injury’
Divock Origi’s status has been confirmed by Jurgen Klopp ahead of the Champions League final. The Belgian is suffering from an injury.
Liverpool’s focus is now squarely on the UEFA Champions League final.
The Reds will compete for a seventh European Cup against Real Madrid on Saturday, which would equal them with AC Milan for the second-most in history.
Of course, Real holds the record with 13. It will be a rematch of the 2018 final between two European titans.
Loris Karius’s two historic errors helped Los Blancos win the game 3-1. It was terrible for Liverpool, but they did recover a year later with a triumph over Tottenham Hotspur.
Divock Origi was the hero of that run, scoring in the Champions League final as well as two goals against Barcelona in the semis.
His availability for Saturday’s game, though, appeared to be in doubt after he was left out of Liverpool’s team against Wolves on Sunday.
And, following the game, Jurgen Klopp rushed to confirm the bad news – Origi will not play in Paris.
“Div is definitely out for the final because he [got] injured in the last second of the last session yesterday,” said Klopp, per Liverpoolfc.com.
“He got a muscle injury, so five days will not be enough for him.”
This is a devastating blow. Origi is Liverpool’s go-to player in important games, whether it’s a Champions League final or a Merseyside derby. Even if he wouldn’t have started the game, not having him on the bench hurts the Reds.
The Reds will seek vengeance against Real Madrid. But they’ll have to do it without their lucky Belgian. Fortunately, they have enough forwards to compensate for his absence.
However, this does feel like a significant loss.
