Deadline Day Shockwave: Spurs Terminate Player’s Contract in Surprising Move
Matt Doherty has departed Tottenham following a mutual decision to terminate his contract on the day of the transfer deadline.
The Irish defender has joined Atletico Madrid after rumors of a loan deal to make room for the £39 million Pedro Porro signing.
However, a late club announcement put an end to Doherty’s career in north London.
A statement read: “We should like to thank Matt for his service and wish him well for the future.”
We have mutually agreed to the termination of Matt Doherty’s contract to enable him to join another club.

Thank you for everything, Doc 💙
The 31-year-old was under contract with Tottenham until the end of the season, with a 12-month extension option.
Doherty played 71 times for Spurs and scored three goals after joining for £20 million in 2020. He played his final game for the club this past weekend in an FA Cup victory at Preston.
He will be introduced as an Atletico Madrid player at a press conference on Wednesday at 12.30pm GMT.
Djed Spence also left the club on transfer deadline day, making a loan move to Rennes of Ligue 1.
Doherty will not be the first Tottenham right-back to join Atletico, as Kieran Trippier made the same move in 2019 before rejoining the Premier League with Newcastle United last year
