David Moyes makes Arsenal Premier League title claim after West Ham defeated at Emirates Stadium’
David Moyes has downplayed Arsenal’s chances of winning the Premier League after the Gunners defeated his West Ham team 3-1 at the Emirates.
The Scotsman opined that Manchester City were superior to his Boxing Day opponents and predicted that they would win the trophy instead.
With Said Benrahma’s penalty kick, the Irons jumped out to a strong start in the encounter, leading at the break. Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Eddie Nketiah scored for the Gunners in the second half to seal a convincing comeback.
The victory gave Arsenal a seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League, but Moyes downplayed their chances of winning the championship, claiming that City is in a stronger position.
“We saw Leicester City win the league so it is not to say you cannot do it,” he told Amazon Prime. “Arsenal have a good side, good players but Manchester City are waiting out there. Most people will say they are a step above others.
“We have played well in a lot of the games, even today and we maybe could have made it 2-0. I was more disappointed in the way we conceded the second and third goals. We had opportunities to clear it for that last one and we didn’t. We can be hard to beat and resilient, we needed to be in the second half and we weren’t.”
The Sky Blues are now in third place, eight points behind Mikel Arteta’s squad, but could close the deficit to five with a win over Leeds on Wednesday.
Despite his warnings about Arsenal’s chances of winning the championship, the 59-year-old confessed that his team was fortunate to be ahead at halftime after missing numerous opportunities to seize the lead.
The Irons have frequently battled this season and now sit only one point above the bottom three, making relegation increasingly likely.
“Arsenal played really well,” he said. “We were 1-0 up at half-time and fortunate to be. We defended well and in the end, the goals we conceded were incredibly disappointing. You cannot fault Arsenal, they played well.
“We were on the break and Said Benrahma underhits a pass to Declan Rice. We turned the ball ourselves and Martin Odegaard should not have had the chance to get the shot away. That goal gave them a lift.”
On New Year’s Eve, Arsenal will face Brighton as they look to maintain their lead at the top of the league. West Ham will host Brentford in a must-win contest if they are to avoid relegation to the Championship for the upcoming season.
