David de Gea must accept a pay cut to extend his contract with Manchester United
David de Gea will be required to accept a substantial wage reduction in order to renew his contract with Manchester United.
The Spanish goalkeeper’s current £375,000-per-week contract at Old Trafford expires at the conclusion of this season. The Reds hierarchy has the option to retain him for one more season and would like to do so. However, they have no plans to do so with his current wage.
They want to reduce De Gea’s weekly earnings by at least £100,000, who is currently club’s second-highest earner behind Cristiano Ronaldo.
That would save them almost $5 million every year. United and De Gea’s representatives have not yet discussed his future beyond the current season.
However, the 32-year-old former Atletico Madrid player is eager to continue with the club he joined in 2011.
He made this obvious before to his 500th game last month. Despite several difficult periods throughout his stay in England, De Gea has consistently defied his detractors by regaining his top form.
This occurred again throughout this season. After an abysmal performance in United’s 4-0 thrashing of Brentford in August, many expected he would be released since he did not suit the passing game implemented by new United manager Erik ten Hag.
However, De Gea has replied with a series of spectacular performances between the posts. Two weeks ago, he was instrumental in a crucial 1-0 victory over West Ham by making three spectacular stops in the last moments.
They served as a timely reminder that, despite no longer being a member of the Spain national team, De Gea, who has 45 international caps, remains a world-class goalkeeper and shot-stopper.
These types of performances have also won over Dutch coach Ten Hag. The Reds supreme has instructed the board to re-sign De Gea, but he recognizes that will only occur if he agrees to take a significant wage cut.
